Gwar, often stylized as GWAR, is an American heavy metal band formed in Richmond, Virginia, in 1984, composed of and operated by a frequently rotating line-up of musicians, artists, and filmmakers collectively known as Slave Pit Inc. Since the death of frontman Dave Brockie in 2014, the collective has continued recording and performing without any of its founding artists or musicians.

Identified by their distinctively grotesque costumes, Gwar’s core thematic and visual concept revolves around an elaborate science fiction-themed mythology which portrays the band members as barbaric medieval nordic, mythological, biblical or interplanetary warriors, a narrative which serves as the basis for all of the band’s albums, live shows and media. With over-the-top violent, sexual, and scatological humor typically incorporating social and political satire, Gwar has attracted both acclaim and controversy for its music and stage shows, the latter of which notoriously showcase enactments of graphic violence that result in the audience being sprayed with fake blood, urine, and semen. Such stagecraft regularly leads Gwar to be labeled a “shock rock” band by the media.

Since its formation, Gwar has released 15 studio albums, two live albums, and numerous singles among other recordings, and has sold over 820,000 records in the United States. Fueled largely by the controversies surrounding their concerts, Gwar experienced brief mainstream notoriety during the first half of the 1990s, receiving regular airplay on MTV as well as frequent in-character guest appearances on daytime talk shows, satirizing the topics of censorship and media violence. Though the band’s mainstream popularity declined by the end of the 1990s, Gwar has retained a dedicated cult following. The band’s extensive videography consists of both live recordings and long-form feature films, most notably 1992’s Phallus in Wonderland, which earned a Grammy Award nomination for Best Long Form Music Video. Gwar has also expanded its brand into other areas such as books, comic books board games, beer, whisky, barbecue sauce, CBD, e-liquids, toy collectibles, and sex toys.

Radulich in Broadcasting’s Beginnings

Mark Radulich has been an internet personality since 2004 with his Progressive Conservatism blog. He then took that blog to the airwaves and created a podcast for it. It then changed to PC Live. After that, he brought out the 411mania Ground and Pound Radio as well.

Also, Mark would partner up with another 411mania alum, Sean Comer, to create the movie franchise review podcast Long Road to Ruin and then Robert Cooper to create the metal album review podcast, The Metal Hammer of Doom. Robert Winfree took over the MMA show and then added his own podcast, Everybody Loves a Bad Guy. That’s when the Radulich in Broadcasting Network was born. Joining Winfree in having their own podcasts were super fan Jesse Starcher (Source Material). Finally, Winfree and Radulich added a weekly movie review show to the ever-growing lists of podcasts on the Network.

Podcasts are one of the greatest mediums ever. 10 years ago Jesse found himself driving back and forth to work with over an hour of travel time. Talk radio became something that he enjoyed and helped kill time during the commute. The problem was NPR never stayed completely interesting and his only other options were the ESPN network and the local channel that hosted religious programming. Always the same show… at the same time. It was pretty limited. About three years ago he discovered Podcasts and it changed how he spent much of his time. It opened up options to great niche content that he never even knew was available. After that, he got his first podcast gig on the From the Cheap Seats sports podcast with Jayson Teasley and became a co-host shortly after that.

His real passion, however, was comics. He managed to talk Mark Radulich into letting him do the network’s premier comic book podcast Source Material. This would give him a platform to chat with friends about one of his favorite hobbies. A tremendous opportunity. Also, recently Jesse has worked his way into becoming the third co-host, alongside Mark Radulich and Robert Cooper, of the Metal Hammer of Doom podcast. He loves music and a podcast about heavy-metal right up his alley.
