On Thursday morning, the San Diego Chargers announced that they were moving to Los Angeles. The team begins play in Los Angeles during the 2017 season, as confirmed by Chargers Owner Dean Spanos.
Los Angeles Chargers to play at Stubhub Center in 2017
They will play the 2017 at the Stubhub Center located in Carson, California. The home of the Los Angeles Galaxy of Major League Soccer. Although, the Chargers have played in San Diego since 1961, they didn’t start there. In 1960, the Chargers actually played their first season in Los Angeles, inside the Los Angeles Coliseum.
The Chargers are the second NFL team to move to Los Angeles in the last year. The Los Angeles Rams moved from St. Louis to L.A. after being in St Louis since 1994.
They also could be the third team moving to a new city in less than a year. There have been ongoing reports that the Oakland Raiders ownership remain vigilant on a potential move to Las Vegas.
The Chargers have spent the better part of 16 years attempting to get a new stadium funded. Spanos and the Chargers organization even had a ballot initiative setup with the city of San Diego last year. However, it did not pass on election day. Now, they are being forced to move to Los Angeles.
Both the Rams and Chargers will share a new stadium beginning in 2019. The stadium is currently being constructed in Inglewood, California. This stadium also hosts Super Bowl LV in 2021.
Sports Illustrated is reporting that the Chargers will not have to borrow money from Rams owner Stan Kroenke to lease the new stadium. They will, however, have to pay $650 million in relocation fees. As well as, fund their own practice facility.
There is no word on what will happen after 2017. The deal for them to play in the Stub Hub Center is only for next season. The NFL will have further discussions on the situation at their next meeting.
